Meet Jess

Hi All! My name is Jess and I am one of the Brewers here at Kinship. I would like to announce an event that the team andI have worked really hard on to bring to the state of Iowa, which is a Breast Cancer Awareness 5K happening Sunday, October 10th!

A little backstory, I am a Breast Cancer Previvor. In March of this year I found out that I am BRCA2 Positive (Breast Cancer Gene). You are probably like me where I had no idea what that was at first or what it meant to have it. My body lacks tumor suppressors and therefore at high risk for Breast, Ovarian, and Pancreatic Cancer. Overwhelmed is truly an understatement and the next thing I knew, a Double Mastectomy was in my near future as I had an extremely high risk associated with my breasts. While getting ready for my surgery, they found a suspicious area on an MRI and I knew right then and there that I was doing the right thing by getting this surgery done.

May 28th 2021, at the age of 27, I had my Double Mastectomy without Reconstruction. As I am getting emotional now typing this out, I am so proud of how far I’ve come in these past two months. I reduced my risk of Breast Cancer to 5%! I still have a long way to go on my journey with my other high risk areas but screening is so crucial. Early Detection is so important and that’s why the 5k, named “Fighting Through Kinship”, means so much to me.

“Fighting Through Kinship” means your fight is our fight. While going through my own journey, the community was beside me and has supported me. That’s what I want to give back to you all. This is for our Survivors, Previvors, Family Members, Friends, and Our Community. We hope you can join us for a day of remembrance, celebration, and giving to three amazing local organizations, Can Do Cancer, Bras for the Cause & Real Men Wear Pink.
